BOOM BOOM COUPLES READY FOR CHAMPIONS TOUR

Say it ain't so, Freddie. Fred Couples will be making his Champions Tour debut this weekend and it's making me feel old. Young, vibrant, superstar; Freddie, you can't really be 50 can you? If that isn't bad enough- Corey Pavin, you too?

Fred Couples' back hurts. Corey Pavin isn't feeling any pain now, but there's always another day or another week when some part of his body will hurt.

This is the Champions Tour, and Couples and Pavin are two of the newest members of the 50-and-over crowd that begins play Friday in the Mitsubishi Electric Championship at the Hualalai Resort in Hawaii.

Champions Tour officials have been waiting for Couples to turn 50 for maybe a decade in the hope that his personality and play (when he's healthy) can stir up interest not seen since Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus decided they were too old to play competitive golf.

And herein lies the rub. While 50 seems unbelievable for Boom Boom, he's not enough to make me turn on the Champions Tour. Sure Nicklaus and Palmer made Champions Tour golf interesting, but there were a couple other huge differences with the way sports is broadcast. Now- I can turn my tv to sports on about 25 different channels. I'm sorry, but Champions Tour golf just isn't going to make the cut.
