J.B. Holmes torches the Blue Monster By Torleif Sorenson on 3/6/15
When developer Donald Trump and renowned architect Gil Hanse redesigned the Blue Monster at Doral, they not only made the course more fan-friendly, they also made the course more dramatic for tour players and resort guests. They probably weren't expecting J.B. Holmes to sink his teeth into it, however. After a 10th-tee start, Holmes fired four birdies, along with a magnificent approach at the 12th hole that almost dropped for a double-eagle, allowing him to hit the turn at -6. Then from the left rough at the 7th hole, with a share of the lead, Holmes coaxed his approach to sneeze-in distance. On Friday afternoon, Holmes started bogey-birdie-bogey, but as of this writing, he still holds a three-shot advantage. The old touring pro adage is that you cannot win a golf tournament on Thursday, but you sure can lose it. However, Holmes has the capability of turning that old saw upside-down.
