He really didn't need to, since he is the world's number-one golfer by a considerable margin. But if the writers at PGATour.com are to be believed, McIlroy was motivated because he was outside the top 100 on the FedEx Cup points list. What is beyond question is that McIlroy felt some kind of urge to return to Quail Hollow, where he won his first PGA Tour victory event and where he shot a course-record 62. "I said, 'I need to play a little bit more. I feel like I'm playing well,'"Perhaps, and yes. Why do we at SkyGolf call Rory McIlroy the "Holywood Matinee Idol?" Because when a worldwide star does things like break his own course record with a jaw-dropping 61 on Saturday, it is impossible to ignore. (Kind of like a four-car pile-up on the freeway, but much better.) That, of course, made his closing-round 69 on Sunday relatively straightforward: Rory's -21 267 is a new tournament record — more than good enough for his 18th professional victory. It was, after all, a seven-shot win over Patrick Rodgers and 2012 U.S. Open champion Webb Simpson. As we told you last week, this is week three of a five-week stretch of important events for Rory. This coming weekend, Rory returns to the U.K. and Eire for the BMW PGA Championship and the Irish Open. After that, of course, is the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay. The race for second......turned out to be a tie. Webb Simpson had his best finish on Tour since winning the 2013 Shriners at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas. It certainly didn't hurt that Simpson not only lives in Charlotte, but is a member at Quail Hollow and knows the course pretty well.Simpson moved back up the Official World Golf Ranking to 36th, from last's week's spot at number 50. Indiana native Patrick Rodgers not only made himself look good, he made Wells Fargo Tournament organizers look good, too. Playing on a sponsor's exemption and without any actual PGA Tour status, Rodgers' Sunday 68 was almost the lowest round of the day — and after a birdie at the par-5 15th hole, was just three behind McIlroy. Had he bested Simpson by just one more stroke, Rodgers would have earned special temporary membership on Tour for the rest of 2015. Rodgers is hardly done, though; he has sponsor exemptions for Colonial in Fort Worth, the Byron Nelson in Dallas, and the Memorial in Columbus. Rodgers exited Stanford University and turned professional last year, earning his Web.com Tour card late last year, then capturing his first win as a pro at the Colombia Championship at the Country Club of Bogotá three months ago.
