![]() A Look at Tour Statistics
I've been a fan of PGA Tour statistics for a long time, because the numbers don't lie ... at least most of the time they don't. The Tour has long run their ad campaign on the theme, "These Guys Are Good." And they are. But just how good are they?
At SCOR Golf, we've been doing a "deep dive" to find out a lot more about the Tour players and their statistics, with the goal of seeing the separation between the "haves" and "have nots" in various categories, particularly as it applies to hitting their approach shots from various distances. Well, the results were surprising, to be honest. We all know these guys hit it miles ... at least most of them, but do they hit close? Well, not all the time, the statistics prove. Here are some interesting factoids revealed by our analysis:
A guy might be the best Mercedes mechanic in the world, but are you going to trust him with yours if he only has a hammer and pipe wrench?

mmm perhaps I'm not that bad after all I have 4 clubs longer than my 5 iron. Driver, 3 Wood, "perfect club" and a 4 iron which means I have 4 clubs to go from 150yds to 220yds if I'm lucky. Think that mechanic last worked on my car 12/12/12

You have turned a light bulb on for me. I have always been trying to get my next shot as close to the pin as possible (excpet for obvious lay ups)instaed of using a shorter (more accurate) club. If that shorter club can get me within 100 yards, I feel pretty good about my next shot. So why risk hitting the longer one out of bounds? Thanks! 12/12/12

You mean that the PGA actually keeps stats on how long all of each players'shots are and how close each approach shot lands. And I thought baseball was obsessed with numbers. 12/15/12

I only have 3 above my 5 iron - Driver, 3 wood and rescue - otherwise the rest are for my target zone - anywhere from 220 yards in !!!!! 12/16/12
