Monterey Pines Golf Course is an 18-hole regulation length golf course originally designed by Robert Muir Graves in 1963 as a 9-hole facility. In 1972, the second nine was opened. The latest redesign was orchestrated by golf architect Marc Messier in 2009.

The Navy Golf Program manages this public/military facility. Although this course is located at the Naval Postgraduate School, civilians may access this newly-renovated course with an advance tee-time by telephone.

Incidentally, the street on which the clubhouse is located is named in memory of U.S. Navy Capt. Michael J. Smith, who was pilot of the ill-fated space shuttle Challenger's final mission on January 28, 1986.
