HISTORY LESSON:
During the 1740s and 1750s, an important Delaware Indian chief, Nemacolin, taught Virginia settlers how to cross the Allegheny barrier ridges via the Cumberland Narrows and what is now known as the Nemacolin Trail. This private country club is named in honor of the chief.

The course itself was designed by Emil Loeffler and John McGwinn, and opened in 1918. But in 1935, A.W. Tillinghast oversaw some changes and improvements to the course, giving the club some additional historic prominence.
