Though in a parkland setting, Valhalla's first nine holes present a links-style appearance, with wide fairways and sculpted mounding. The bent-grass greens are surrounded by collars of thick Kentucky bluegrass, with plenty of water, grassy hollows, and sand also in play. This Jack Nicklaus design is now owned by the PGA of America and will host the PGA Championship in 2014.

Since opening in 1986, Valhalla has hosted an impressive roster of PGA of America championships and events:

1996 PGA Championship (Mark Brooks)
2000 PGA Championship (Tiger Woods, playoff)
2002 PGA Club Professional Championship (Barry Evans)
2004 Senior PGA Championship (Hale Irwin)
2008 Ryder Cup Matches (USA 16½, Europe 11½)
2011 Senior PGA Championship (Tom Watson)
